Okay, Starved Rock State Park was one of the “super hot, super buggy” spots I mentioned in my last post. It was, however, very cool because I had no idea there were real canyons in the Midwest! But surprise, they do exist, and apparently, they’re all tucked into this sweet little state park. And let me tell you, they’re impressive. Lush, green, mossy, and full of that magical “hidden fairyland” vibe that feels totally unexpected for the Midwest.
Fun bonus: we were also tickled to be only an hour away from the hometown of my bestie and another good buddy who highly recommended a fave fried chicken spot. And I have to say, it did NOT disappoint. They serve their “crispies” (those delicious little golden fried bits that fall off the chicken) alongside sliced pickles and I’m telling you, for those of us who have not tried this, we have been missing out! I ate so many crispies and pickles that I didn’t have room for my actual fried chicken wings when they arrived. This did not, however, stop me from eating them. (And for those wondering, yes, my tummy did hurt later that night but only a little.) This was a short, quick stop but well worth it! Beautiful nature, secret canyons, and unforgettable fried chicken? Yes, please!
